Cragon why do you only do four bays at a time? When I fill Defs I find two Defs which have a similar production value (this ensures that both usually hit -525 at the same time) that are supplied by the same Planet.....say Doris.......I then go to Doris and by 7 bays of each commod (or however much is available) come back and sell them to myself to get to 0 (I set max on defs to 200 to keep from accidently hurting myself to badly).....
repeat 7-8 times for different commod sets....the trick is finding that planet that sells both products.....thanks for the Trading pages Cragon!!!!
Anyway that is why I do 7 of each why do you do 4?

I think Smitty may be able to explain buying 4 bays instead of 7 better than I can as it is his model that I am using to fill my defs but here is why I am following Smitty's method. After buying the first bay of anything the cost per ton jumps significantly and I find overall you make a better profit to buy low and sell high even on your own planet. With only 4 bays of defs at a time the -525 level is reached must faster in order to refill again. I used to fill 7 bays of defs at a time and there is nothing wrong with that as you will still make a good profit. It is simply a matter of choice for me that works well to fill only 4 at a time. I have grouped commods together when I buy according to where they are available..for example..my first trip is to Phobos for Microscalpels then to Mars for Sens and Musiks. Second trip is back to Phobos for Proteins, Clinics and Probes. Third trip is to Doris for BioChips and Accuminata for Alloys and Nickel. Works for me and if what you are doing works for you thats great. Experimenting to see what works best for you is half the fun. Cragon

First, thanks to Cragon and Smitty for the explanations on the high stockpile/low spread situation.
Second, I think buying any more than three bays at ANY planet (other than the low spread/high stockpile player planets) is wasting your money. I find that I can make the greatest profit by buying no more than three bays at any planet. After that, you get too close to the base price...and for those of us with our exchanges set to 40%, we're not going to make much off the transaction when selling to our exchanges. I can make 1 meg in pocket change just by filling my commods two or three times a day.
For example, I have to buy a lot of biological, so I go to Silk and buy 3 bays of Labs, and to Doris for 3 bays of labs. I sell all six to my exchange. My only exception is Biocomp, which I buy from three exchanges (2 bays each) because the price just rockets after the first two bays.
Third (in response to Smitty...re: events), my mistake (?) was that some of my deficits I have set to 20000, despite what I read here recently! After my event disaster explained previously, I toyed with the idea of producing a stockpile from an event, but now I don't know if it is worth it. I doubt it is!

Ok I see (thanks cragon/brooke) it is all about personal profit (4/3 vs 7) rather than my planet's EX......thanks for the insight....

Dupree, there is nothing wrong with filling four bays at a time. I used to fill some lesser commods with just three bays (but only ended up with sore arms from typing too much, too often). Filling your deficits is definitely about the exchange. I just need all the help I can get and since I often use my pocket change to complete a build, I look for ways to maximize any profits I can make. I say whatever works for you is fine. I know you have been very succesful with your planet since it came online, so you just keep on keepin' on!
